Introduction to Telugu
Telugu is one of the most generally spoken language members of the Dravidian language family. It is the official language of Andra Pradesh, Telangana, and Yanam district of Puducherry, India., which are occupied predominantly by Telugu people. There are approximately 82 million speakers of Telugu.
Telugu has several regional dialects and a total of three major social dialects, which are Harijan, Brahman, and non-Brahman. The spoken Telugu dialects are separate from their literary formal language. This situation is referred to as diglossia where the same languages are used differently under different conditions. The written Telugu script consists of a total of 60 symbols which include 16 vowels, 3 vowel modifiers, and 41 consonants.
Introduction to NAATI CCL
In January 2018, the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) introduced a new Credentialed Community Language (CCL) Test which is known as the NAATI CCL Test. This test determines a candidate’s aptitude to convey the meaning of a conversation from the English language to LOTE (Language Other Than English) and the other way around, at the community level.
Having said that, it is also important for us to know that if an individual has successfully passed a NAATI CCL test that does not mean that the person actually certifies to work as an interpreter or translator. But you can surely claim the 5 immigration points for an Australia PR visa which is also referred to as Credentialed Community Language Points.
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions introduced by the Australian government, NAATI CCL has now begun to conduct tests online from April 2020. Prior to this, NAATI used to conduct CCL tests at the dedicated test centres in each of the 6 major cities of Australia: Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, and Hobart.
The candidates taking the test from overseas or other parts of Australia also had to travel to these cities to sit this test. Thereby, the introduction of online testing has been a boon for those who are taking this test from overseas or regional Australia.
NAATI CCL Telugu
Many students from India had been requesting NAATI to include the Telugu language within the CCL testing. NAATI CCL Telugu was included in the CCL testing after the wait of 2 long years of NAATI CCL already being introduced.
But finally, the students are now able to take the NAATI CCL test in the Telugu language from July 2020.
The format of the Telugu exam remains equivalent to other NAATI exams which will contain two dialogues where students are going to be required to translate from Telugu to English and English to Telugu. Dialogues would be from a real-life domain such as:
Health | Legal | Community | Immigration |
Education | Social Services | Finance | Housing |
Business | Employment | Insurance | Consumer Affairs |
The length of the test is 20 minutes, within which you have to interpret two dialogues Each dialogue usually has 300 words, 150 of which in Telugu and the remaining 150 in English. The longest dialogue segment is about 35 words. You can request one repetition and one correction in the NAATI CCL Telugu exam dialogue.
If you don’t ask for any repetition and correction in the first dialogue then you can ask for two in the latter one. You get scored for your accuracy and fluency. The weightage for speaking English is higher than speaking in Telugu so we suggest you to focus on preparing for the English part better.
You don’t need to use complicated words to score higher. Rather focus on conveying the intended meaning. You need to score a minimum of 29 in each dialogue out of 45 and in 2 dialogues to score 63 in total to pass the NAATI CCL Test.
