Common Mistakes to Avoid during NAATI CCL Test
We all want good scores at any test and we do prepare our best for it, there’s no doubt. But sometimes how well we’ve prepared does not determine our actual performance, it may come down to how we handle the situations that could arise. So, we have to be prepared for a possible scenario minimizing the mistakes during the NAATI Test.
During the NAATI CCL test, there are a few things you should be aware of so that you don’t end up making the same trail of mistakes. If you’re reading this, then you might be one of the lucky ones who can learn from the poor decisions made by the previous NAATI CCL test candidates. Here are some of the mistakes we tend to make while under the pressure of taking the NAATI CCL tests:
1. Being too literal
You don’t have to translate word for word as doing so does not mean you’ll get the perfect translation. Sometimes, the words may have the metaphorical meaning and you’ll have to figure it out with the context, situation of the dialogue along with the tone in which it is said. You should focus on trying to convey what the dialogue means rather than focusing too much on the word to word interpretation.
2. Omission of words
While you’re facing the test and the examiner, don’t let the pressure make you skip on the words that pretty much give context and meaning to the situation. So, make sure you do not forget these words or you could lose some valuable information. This could straight-up cost you a few points. But it does not mean you should add up a few of your own, it’s important to be accurate and stay on your lane.
3. Getting facts and figures wrong
As most of the dialogues are based on real-life scenarios, there could be a use of facts and figures in them. You should be careful with these, as getting them wrong could create misinformation in most of the cases and you could easily lose some points. So, you should pay special attention to these things or take notes to make sure you don’t forget.
4. Hesitating to ask for repetition and rephrasing
It’s not always possible to get the dialogue on the first play. In this situation, you should not hesitate to ask for repetition. You can ask for one repetition per dialogue without any penalty, according to NAATI. However, asking too many times could be off-putting and could possibly lead to the deduction of your points.
Under the pressure, you may not always say things in the correct order and it is okay to do that if you can turn things around with a simple request for self-correction. You shouldn’t be hesitant in this situation. But make sure that you don’t overdo this, mistakes like these cannot be considered multiple times.
5. Use of language register
Language register is the way a speaker chooses the words, tone of voice and body language depending upon the situations. Where it is always a good practice to make use of formal language, you can interpret the conversation after understanding the situation by maintaining the language register. A slow pace can make you sound clearer to the examiner.
6. Making grammatical errors
While translating, you should be aware of the possible grammatical errors. The forms of the nouns, tense and the speech should not be altered. Altering these can change the meaning of the dialogue and take it to a totally different direction. Grammatical errors can easily be detected and the examiners are strict about these kinds of mistakes.
7. Noting things down
Make sure that you write important stuff down such as the adjectives and adverbs which add up information so that you do not get them wrong or leave them out. This could make a huge difference in the result. It’s okay to trust oneself’s ability to remember things, but taking notes will only boost your ability and it’s better to be safe than sorry at crucial times like these.
